That is why so many men freak out when little white bumps appear on their sensitive areas. In many cases these tiny protrusions are nothing more than Pearly Penile Papules, a naturally occurring skin variation that to date shows no signs of health concerns or the ability to be transmitted.

In fact, researchers have been studying these protrusions as far back as the 1960s when they started to discover their origins. In the 40 years since then we have learned a lot about the condition. Some clinical studies, for example show that Pearly Penile Papules, also known as PPP, occur more commonly in uncircumcised men. In the past, the cause of PPP was thought to be an accumulation of smegma in uncircumcised men. This is because the sebaceous gland is a microscopic gland in the skin that secretes an oily and waxy matter called sebum that lubricates and waterproofs the skin and hair. Sometimes these glands can become infected, especially in warm, enclosed areas similar to certain areas of the penis found on uncircumcised men. This of course has proven to be untrue, but some research indicates that sebaceous gland infection may still be the cause of PPP.

Furthermore, diagnosis confirmation can be obtained by putting a biopsy specimen through rigorous histologic and pathologic analysis. But given their non-cancerous nature, no staging system exists.

In some respects, PPP studies have dwindled once they were proven to be non-harmful skin variations. Most medical advances come from the coffers of well-funded research facilities. Since PPP is not considered harmful, medical research money typically is spent elsewhere. STDs, cancer, AIDS and other more deadly diseases or infections take the majority of the share of medical research funds. This may be why no known topical medication can treat PPP. Some surgical methods can, however, remove the bumps.

Pearly Penile Papule Treatment and Removal http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2008/05/pearly-penile-papules-and-its-removal/ http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2008/05/pearly-penile-papules-and-its-removal/#comments Wed, 07 May 2008 09:22:36 +0000 http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2008/05/pearly-penile-papules-pearly-penile-papules-removal/ You’ve been to the doctor and now you know that you do not have some kind of sexually transmitted disease or have cancerous lesions on your penis. Those little white bumps are just pearly penile papules. But, maybe that doesn’t make you feel any better. The penis is the epitome of manhood- you get great pleasure from it, you make babies with it. But, it can also cause you a lot of grief. Now, you’ve got these, albeit benign, ugly bumps rimming your penis like a strand of pearls. You’re embarrassed to shower in the locker room and dates… well, forget about it. You worry she’ll think it’s a disease or in the very least, ugly. And, though they aren’t dangerous, they do cause some sensitivity that is not always welcome.

Sometimes the pearly penile papules go away by themselves, but sometimes they don’t and in worst case scenario, they come back in higher numbers. Not all treatment options work as well as others, but you do have varying degrees of treatment possibilities. To save your time, the following are a list of treatments to avoid and treatments to try.

What does not work?

Home Remedies- Over the counter products you get at the drug store will not work. The common wart removal products like freezing and the pads will not get rid of the bumps. Also, do not try to pop or scrape off the lesion. This can lead to permanent scarring and infection. You will end up worse off than when you just had the bumps.

Topical and Oral treatment- There are no proven effective treatments using a topical lotion, such as podophyllin, or a pill.

What does work?

Cryotherapy- This treatment involves freezing the lesion with liquid nitrogen. The lesion should peel, blister or scab and then fall off. Though it is performed in a doctor’s office, the results are varied and there is no guarantee it will work as well as you want. But if the other treatments make you squeamish, you can try it.

Electrodessication with curettage- This procedure, using a local anesthetic, is more effective in that it uses a special tool to scrap off the bump. It is commonly used for benign growths and minor cancerous skin lesions. Once the scraping is complete, the area is cauterized to stop the bleeding and seal the wound.

Excisional Surgery- This treatment involves actual surgical removal of the bumps and then sutures to close it up. Non-affected tissue may be removed along with the lesion. A local anesthetic is used. This may be more tedious and is certainly not the easiest method of treatment.

CO2 Laser Ablation- Numbing cream and lidocaine are administered to make the procedure less painful. The carbon dioxide laser is used to vaporize the bump without damaging the skin around it. There will be some pain, swelling and scabbing afterwards and complete recovery may take a couple of weeks.

Just remember, removal is not necessary. However, if you notice that their presence is affecting your self-confidence and intimate encounters are embarrassing, you now know that you have options. No matter what, it is a good idea to see a doctor for an official diagnosis. If you decide to, your doctor can then recommend the best method of treatment for you.

Pearly Penile Papules – They’re not an STD http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/pearly-penile-papules-not-std/ http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/pearly-penile-papules-not-std/#comments Fri, 21 Sep 2007 02:13:45 +0000 http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/pearly-penile-papules-not-std/ The 3 Harmless Things Guys Usually Mistake For An STD
By Gregory Thompson

If you ever look “down there” one day and notice something that wasn’t there before… that you don’t think should be there… don’t panic.

At least not just yet.

That’s because ever since I started my website on the subject, I realized there were several very common things a lot of guys tend to get that are often mistaken for an STD, namely genital warts or herpes. And since as high as 30% of all guys can have something like this happen to them in their lifetime (any of them can spring up literally overnight), knowing the facts can save you a lot of trouble down the road.

So here are the most common mistakes guys make, what they are, and what you should do about them:

Mistake #1. Pearly Penile Papules – These are usually white gland-like things that form in a ring around the rim of the head of your penis (before the head meets the shaft), and can sometimes even form on the underside of the head as well. They can vary in length and how densely they form. But don’t worry, they are completely harmless. Do not try to remove them or else they will bleed and you will have larger problems than before you started. Penile papules thrive a lot on moisture, so keeping the area very dry can sometimes reduce their size, but will never get rid of them altogether. If your case is particularly bad, there is a laser procedure you can get from a doctor, but almost all cases of this are only noticeable to the guy who has them and it is rare for anyone else who might see them to really take notice.

Mistake #2. Fordyce Spots – These are usually a lot of tiny bumps that form around the shaft of your penis that are usually the same color as the surrounding skin, but can also result in small “mole-like” patches that are darker than the surrounding skin. Sometimes they look like goose bumps. These are commonly mistaken for genital warts, but they are quite harmless and nothing bad will ever happen to you because of them. Some guys have asked me if there are any ways of getting rid of them, and from the research I’ve done the only thing that seems to be an option for guys with extreme cases is laser treatment from a doctor. But just like the penile papules, almost all cases of Fordyce spots are most noticible only to the guy who has them, and will probably not even be noticed by anyone else who might be looking down there.

Mistake #3. Male Yeast Infection - Believe it or not, it is actually possible for guys to get yeast infections. This most commonly happens by having it spread to you by a woman who has a problem with recurring yeast infections. She doesn’t even have to have any visible signs for it to spread to you, either. Three or four days after you have sex, red pimple-like spots and/or red rashes can appear on and around the head of your penis. Left untreated, this can spread and get much worse. In the long run, it is generally harmless but can itch very badly, sometimes to the point of the constant urge to scratch. You’re going to want to get rid of this as fast as possible, so dob generous amounts of castor oil on there to get it under control while you go get some anti-yeast infection cream to take care of the rest.

I realize words can only help to an extent, so for pictures of these and more, feel free to check out my website to get an even better fix on identifying these so you can rest easier should you ever find them on you.

Sick and tired of all the scams and disinformation on the internet about successful genital warts treatment options, Greg Thompson has helped thousands overcome genital warts after his personal experience prompted him to write The Genital Warts Report and create a website of the same name at http://www.GenitalWartsReport.com

Pearly Penile Papule Treatment http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/pearly-penile-papule-treatment/ http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/pearly-penile-papule-treatment/#comments Fri, 21 Sep 2007 02:02:33 +0000 http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/pearly-penile-papule-treatment/ CO2 Laser Ablation of Pearly Penile Papules

Pearly penile papules are small dome-shaped bumps that sometimes appear around the circumference of the sulcus or corona of the penis. These bumps, or papules, are commonly skin-colored or slightly lighter than the skin.

Pearly penile papules, technically called hirsuties papillaris genitalis, are not sexually transmitted. Their cause is unknown, although they are more common in men in their twenties and thirties, and are also more common in uncircumcised males.

Some men choose to leave this condition untreated, as the papules are generally asymptomatic. However, many men find this condition to be embarassing in intimate situations and suffer detrimental social and emotional effects from leaving the papules untreated.

Treatment for pearly penile papules is typically quite simple and effective through carbon dioxide laser treatment by a qualified dermatologist.

San Diego dermatologist Dr. Groff is experienced in treating pearly penile papules, and will be happy to discuss your concerns with you.

As with all surgery, there are risks. General surgical risks include inflammation and infection, hematoma, scarring issues, swelling, bruising, and numbness.

Once you decide pearly penile papule treatment is right for you, start by making an appointment with one or more of our board-certified dermatologists. While at your consultation, talk to him or her about your specific goals and expectations. By discussing your specific surgical expectations, the physician will be able to exam you and tell you what they think can be realistically achieved. The more you share in consultation with the dermatologist, the more likely you are to be happy with your result.

Penile Papule FAQ http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/penile-papule-faq/ http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/penile-papule-faq/#comments Fri, 21 Sep 2007 02:00:37 +0000 http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/penile-papule-faq/ FAQ – What Are the White Lumps On My Penis?
By John Helios

There are many people out there with white lumps on their penis. The penis being a hard thing to talk about in person this means many people may go years without reporting these white lumps. We hope here to put your mind at ease and explain the most likely reasons for why the lumps have appeared.

The lumps may appear white or yellowish and when left unchecked they will multiply and get worse with time. They appear mostly on the underside/bottom of the head of the penis or around the base of the hair follicles. They are white and are painless although may become sensitive during oral sex.

There isn’t any reason to worry because they are normal and many men have them. They aren’t likely to be cancer or an STD. The probability is that you have “pearly penile papules” or it is due to the grease glands getting blocked. There are several quite normal and harmless lumps and spots that can appear on the penis.

The grease glands (sebaceous glands) that everyone possesses in their skin can become enlarged which is most likely to happen on the shaft of the penis and the scrotum. Then these may even become blocked and develop into lumps. These lumps then become full of a creamy substance (sebaceous cysts). Hence the white lumps.

The small spots that can appear around the rim of the end of the penis (the glans penis) are the “pearly penile papules” are harmless and should not cause any pain or symptoms either.

Whatever the case you must go and see you doctor and have a thorough medical examination. Hospitals often have genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics which are open access facilities and they are the people who deal with this type of medical problem more than anyone else. Pearly Penile Papules at Wikipedia http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/pearly-penile-papules-wiki/ http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/pearly-penile-papules-wiki/#comments Fri, 21 Sep 2007 01:53:27 +0000 http://pearlypenilepapules.net/2007/09/pearly-penile-papules-wiki/ Hirsuties papillaris genitalis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hirsuties papillaris genitalis (more commonly referred to as “pearly penile papules” (PPP)) is a clinical skin condition of the male genital organs. It is a harmless physiological phenomenon with no malignant potential. The papules appear as one or several rows of small, flesh-colored, smooth, dome-topped bumps situated circumferentially around the corona  or sulcus of the glans penis. Uncommonly, lesions may extend onto the glans penis. It is not a sexually transmitted disease and its appearance is unrelated to sexual activity or standards of personal hygiene. The bumps are however extremely sensitive and many sufferers view this sensitivity as unwelcome. A 1999 medical study found that 48% of 200 men attending a department of genitourinary medicine had the condition. Various other studies have shown that the number may be in the interval between 8% and 48%, varying with region and whether or not the subjects are circumcised. Lesions typically are asymptomatic and persist throughout life; however, they gradually may become less noticeable with increased age.
